I had always sewed and it seemed as though quilting would be a fun and creative way to spend some of my time after retirement. So to that end, I started buying quilt fabric. Not much at once, but a little here and a little there. The colors I loved then, I still love. THANK GOODNESS!!
In the midst of stocking up for the future, I met Tom. And one thing led to another. We got married and my then dog Davey went to the Bridge. But I am not one to ever be without a dog so I insisted that I have another dog.........that day. We went to the Arizona Humane Society and while I wanted another German shepherd, Tom's eye was caught by this big black dog with a huge white blaze on his chest. Tom keeps telling me that he has heard so many wonderful things about giant schnauzers over the years. He said they are very intelligent like a GSD, but fun and playful at the same time. He hadn't heard that they were stubborn! This was a young wild ten month old pup who was an owner turn in. Didn't give a reason. We should have been wary of the no reason. We took him out of his kennel and he was beyond happy to get out of jail! He came home with us that day and my life changed in that moment.
Gone were the plans for quilting all the time after I retired. Although it took some time for me to realize that since becoming involved in giants took hold of us slowly. But I still kept buying quilt fabric.
Somehow today we have five giant schnauzers, one mini schnauzer, one foster giant schnauzer and one foster mini mix who is ancient. The sweet little old foster has some problems with bladder control or else he never lived in a house before. Who knew. He is an 11 year old owner turn in who was scheduled to be euthanized when we snatched him to safety. But because of his urinary incontinence, our own little mini has decided that he is not quite house trained any more either.
So belly bands came into our lives. I ordered four, two for each dog. Now we are down to two. I can't fathom how these belly bands can disappear other than the fact that T-Bone HATES them! But two have walked away. So in my irritation, I went into the sewing room to find fabric that I could use to make some replacements. I might as well have walked into my local quilt store. I have fabrics of every color that I love in there. It is all safely stored in big plastic bins keeping it clean. I also have plastic containers that have double fold bias tape for the edges, just the right width of plastic to put along the sides in the middle, plenty of choices of lining fabrics, albeit not nearly as many as exterior choices. But, there is no velcro. Not something I ever used much of in sewing.
Velcro will be the last thing I sew to make the belly bands before putting the binding on, so I can get some of that tomorrow.
But I am now going to start quilting. I have to! We could have gone to Tahiti if I had saved that money instead of buying quilt fabric! I know quilt collected quilt fabric is called a stash, but that is ridiculous! I can remember when I did crewel and needlepoint and had so many pillows on my couches and chairs that people had to remove them to sit down. Hmmm, guess I have always over done things just a tad.
