Last Sunday and email came through my email about a dog needing urgent rescue. When one email is spectacular in nature, they tend to take on a life of their own. This one was graphic in nature and heart wreching to see. It was of a male doberman less than one year old who had been found in the desert south of Yuma, Arizona. He was in need of urgent medical attention. He was at the Yuma Humane Society who got him the urgent care he so despesterately needed. But he also needed a rescue to take him in and care for him, to nurse him back to health. I volunteered my rescue, Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue to help him. We are lucky enough to have Dr. Suzanne Higgins of Deer Creek Animal Hospital as a member of our group. Yuma, as he has been named, arrived at Deer Creek on Tuesday morning driven up here by a volunteer and board member of the Yuma Humane Society.
Yuma is very literally a walking skeleton. But he is a very happy skeleton. Maybe he is just happy that he has a regular source of food and lots of people to love him. By some miracle all of his bloodwork has been negative so he has an excellent chance of finishing up growning and being a normal dobe boy. He weighs only thity pounds right now.
He is a very happy boy whose little nub wiggles back and forth with his whole body. This causes his front shoulders to also wiggle back and forth slightly as does his head. He is truly happy to be alive which is hard to fathom. He does have a nice looking coat so he should be a healthy boy once he gains some weight and is neutered. But I don't think he was in the desert very long. He needs to have his nails clipped and a dog can't be in the desert very long and still have long toe nails. They just wear down walking on the rough surfaces. Someone, for what eversick reason, did this to this poor boy. But Yuma has a forgiving spirit and still loves mankind. If I can get past what happened to him, maybe I can learn this lesson about some of my fellow man.
Yuma will be placed into a loving new home by Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue in Phoenix, Arizona after he has gained some weight and has been neutered. The Yuma Humane Society is still collecting monies to pay for his vet expenses in Yuma and Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue is collecting money to pay for his vet expenses in Phoenix.
